A while ago I was asked to do a shoot for a client who does packaging and rents out storage units. The ad agency gave me the description of the kind of guy they wanted to use as a model. I always recommend using professional models, it's just easier to work with a pro. In this case, however, her description sounded an awful lot like a friend of mine. Now, let's be fair, he could be a professional model, he's just not. So we hired him. We did the shoot and it was a lot of fun. We made him pose in front of storage units, pretending to load boxes. The client loved him and the shoot was a huge success. A while later he signed a model release to give the client permission to use one of his photos on a billboard. She said they're only making a billboard to use in Port Elizabeth, so, since it wasn't going to be used in Joburg, I didn't give it any further thought.
As you may or may not know, I'm in the process of shooting a coffee table book for a logistics/shipping client. Imagine my surprise, when, driving to the harbour in Port Elizabeth last night, I looked up and saw my billboard. I nearly yelled a little. My client took me back to the billboard after shooting at the harbour, just so I could get a photo of it. So there you have it. Sometimes life has these awesome little moments you stumble upon when you least expect it.
